Research (Information Boards)

Image
Information Board Research  Information boards are used in many different types of organisations for communication purposes. Using these types of boards is an effective way of displaying information and communicating with the audience the board is intended for. Placing information boards at carefully-chosen strategic spots in can help gain peoples attention. The information board above uses a image in the background as the main attraction of the board. The 'light' text in the title 'light and heat' does not stand immediately and the first words noticed are 'and heat'. This is something I will need to avoid when creating my design so I need to consider what background colours I will be using carefully. A way around this dilemma would be to add a shape to the background of the text and change the opacity.  I quite like the idea of this design. I am considering including a timeline at this point in time but I am not sure if I would want it to take ...

Harry Beck, London Underground and Design (Lecture)

Notes on video-  Design has played a big part of the London Underground  1863 worlds first underground system to use steam trains.  Many people used to view the London Underground as hell in the 18th century.  1910- New electric trains.  The unconscious- people who had their photos taken asleep on the underground.  people considered trains on the tube as the"the padded cell'  Advertising was used to reduce peoples anxiety of travelling on the tube.  Design was used to encourage people to travel  Frank Pick - Helped design the branding. He comissioned Edward Johnson to create typeface.  Frank pick wanted to get rid of the victorian feel of the underground and out up good designs and are it feel more welcoming.  pointed out the benefits of underground travelling. METRO LAND built up the undergrounds reputations by creating designs and pieces of art.  First branding by Frank Pick  London Underground is consid...

Research (Tudor House Museum Visit)

Tudor House Museum Visit  I found this trip to the Tudor museum very helpful as I was able to get a feel for the place I will be creating designs for. This visit was probably the most critical part of my design process as it will influence my ideas and designs.  I really liked having the freedom of being able to pick any room I wanted to design for.  The room I have been most drawn to is the 'Worcester at War' room. I feel like there is a lot of potential in this room but the subject matter is something I am also very interested in so I am confident I will be able to create interesting designs but also stay interested in the subject matter.  These are some photos taken at the Tudor House Museum I will be focusing on the Worcester at War room so I think it is more important to include the photos from this room on this blog.

Research (Typefaces)

Typefaces  Helvetica was originally named Neue Haas Grotesk. It is a sans serif typeface developed in 1957 by swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger with input from Eduard Hoffmann. Switzerland use the Font as its hallmark, the governments documents are printed in Helvetica. It was quickly swept up by companies all over the world to  make word-marks and logos. Over 40 worldwide businesses today use it as part of their logo including BMW, Lufthansa, Jeep and American Apparel. The clothing brand American Apparel are one of the most notable users of the typeface.  After talks with my tutor about the font, I was recommended to look at the Gill Sans type face.  Gill Sans  Gill Sans was designed by the English artist and type designer  Eric Gill.  The roots of Gill Sans can be traced to the typeface that Gill's teacher, Edward Johnston, designed for the signage of the London Underground Railway in 1918. Gill´s alphabet i...

Research (Maps & Museums)

Image
Research  Before I start creating concept ideas, I need to carry out some research. Here I will be looking at information graphics which will include tourist information graphics and looking at the different information graphics which are or have been present in different museums.  It is important to compare works of other museums so I can see what I will be competing with as I want my information graphics to stand out and be successful and visually pleasing to look at.  I also need to carry out research into information graphics for a broad range of people. I need to take in to account disabled, visually impaired, deaf, elderly and young people as well as children.  I also need to consider the cultural aspects of design which I will cover in my research.  Tourist Information Maps & Leaflets After viewing different sort of tourist information maps I have found the majority of these maps include a lot of vector graphics. With m...
